Many college students struggle to plan study abroad experienes because resources are scattered across multiple sites. There are limited peer support and budgeting is hard to manage.
The process is messy.
Tater Trips is an app created to simplify this process into one platform that helps students plan, save, and connect.
I led the user interface and user experience design for the project. I focused on creating the wireframes, wire-framing, and prototyping.
The idea emerged from our own frustrations planning trips abroad. Dealing with confusing visa requirements, unclear housing options, and limited budgeting tools can be very stressful.
During the ideation phase, we brainstormed possible solutions: a platform combining study abroad resources, budgeting, housing reviews, and student forums.
We decided on "potato avatars" as a friendly metaphor for growth and exploration.
Our primary color, yellow, was used to reflect optimism and energy. We wanted to focus on a playful UI to make the experience feel lighthearted.
We conducted user interviews with a few undergraduate students and gathered survey responses for interest and usability.
To better understand how undergraduate students plan and prepare for studying abroad, we distributed a survey to college students.
Our goal was to uncover their main challenges and decision-making processes.
Use search engines to research trips
Rely on friends’ recommendations
Use travel agencies
Main challenges identified:
🏠 Find affordable accommodations
🚗 Budget for transportation expenses
🪪 Understand visa requirements
A sustainability-focused fashion app that helps users track their clothing usage and waste impact. It has features such as cost-per-wear analysis and daily outfit logging.
We designed the experience around these core features: cost-per-wear tracker, material & sustainability tracker, and daily outfit logging.
Our primary color (#FFD673) is used to represent energy and and adventure. We wanted our visual brand to highlight friendliness and connection similiar as traveling abroad.
The playful potatoes motif symbolizes growth and shared journeys (such as the different type of potatoes).
The forum is the social hub where students can connect with other students who are planning or currently experiencing travel abroad.
Our key features are topic threads, experience sharing, and peer support. Students can start or join discussions about housing reviews, budgeting tips, or destinations.
While initial surveys showed low interest in community features, follow-up A/B testing and interviews revealed that once users interacted with peer-generated posts, engagement increased significantly.
The Program Overview feature is the central research tool as it helps students explore, compare, and evaluate study abroad programs.
The goal is to simplify research with preparation checklists and resources for visas, tuition, housing, and coursework.
Each program page has an at-a-glance overview with timelines, rankings, student reviews, and key statistics.
The budgeting section breaks down costs into clear categories to help users understand total expenses. There is visualize aid, scholarships, and out-of-pocket estimates.
A user can take a personalization match where they can see how much money they will need to save for certain programs.
At the end of their budget personalization match, they are presented with the budget plan which shows their remaining savings, potential scholarship earnings, and time to complete.
